The spread of HIV infection and the AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) epidemic has been especially problematic in the countries of the Third World, and health professionals have attempted to determine the correlation between existing efforts towards reducing its spread and positive outcomes for at-risk populations. One of the emerging problems as AIDS and HIV infection continues to spread untreated is the presence of AIDS related dementia, also described as AIDS Dementia Complex, Dementia related to HIV infection, or HIV encephalopathy.
